Nicole looked out the window to see her husband, Luke, drive off to work. She sighed as she stared and thought about what to do for the day. The two were newlyweds, though they had been dating for quite some time before they finally tied the knot. There were times where she wondered if he only proposed because of her rather overt hints or because he actually wanted to.

After their honeymoon, he had been rather distant, rarely cuddling in bed with her. In fact, the last time they had been intimate was over a month ago. She took a deep breath and grabbed her phone before sitting on the bed, scrolling through the news.

She had been tapped by her company to travel to South Africa, or more specifically Botswana, to audit one of the offices there. Apparently there had been reports of rampant corruption. She wasn’t a big fan of the idea as that was one country she had never been particularly interested in. Her phone rang, her news app pausing to see if she wanted to answer it.

“Hello?” She answered, tapping the speakerphone and moving the phone app to the side to read the news as she spoke.

“Nicole! Looks like our manager has set the travel dates,” her coworker, Janet, replied.

“Yeah? So it’s official, we’re going to Botswana?” Nicole inquired, feeling a bit upset.

“Yup, it’s official,” Janet responded, rather cheerfully.

“Did he send the itinerary we’re supposed to book?” Nicole asked.

“Yeah, he sent mine. Yours should be coming by your email soon,” Janet responded.

Like clockwork, her phone buzzed and a notification scrolled across the top, letting her know that an email from her manager had arrived. She gritted her teeth and rolled her eyes as she pulled up the itinerary.

“Next week?!” Nicole blurted.

“Yeah, I know, crazy. I need to find a sitter for my dog or see if Lee can take him in for the three weeks,” Janet said.

“Three weeks? I thought it was a two week trip,” Nicole replied as she took a closer look at the itinerary.

“That’s what I thought but they changed it up. I guess they think it’s going to take a bit longer because there’s all new staff down there,” Janet said, her voice trailing as she walked away from her phone.

“Unbelievable,” Nicole groaned.

“I know, isn’t it?” Janet responded, sounding much more cheery.

“You sound pretty happy about this.”

“I’m not too happy about the short notice, but we’re going to South Africa! I used to live there with my family, it’s a beautiful place,” Janet replied.

Nicole couldn’t help but roll her eyes a bit. “Yeah, I’m sure it is,” she said. She had forgotten that Janet was a world traveler and loved to go to places. Janet would tell stories about her time in South Africa, rather often and Nicole couldn’t believe she had forgotten about it.

“You sound pretty bummed.”

“Hm? Well, I mean, I wasn’t planning on such a long trip, and I don’t think Luke is going to like that,” Nicole answered.

“Is he still being cold?” Janet inquired.

“Yeah, it’s like he’s always got something else on his mind.”

“Well, remember what I told you, and that app I sent you a link to.” Janet said.

Nicole bit her lower lip as she nodded to no one in particular. Her coworker had put out the idea that maybe, just maybe, Luke was already cheating. That his heart was elsewhere. Nicole was a bit off put at the thought but Janet was one to say things bluntly. All the signs seemed to line up and Janet had given her an app that could be used to track her husband’s movements.

“I don’t want to resort to tracking him. I’m not going to be that kind of wife,” Nicole replied.

“That’s fair. Just be careful. You know me, I have to say what’s on my mind,” Janet said.

“I know. Well, guess I better start packing. What kind of clothing should I wear?”

“It’s going to be so damn hot down there this time of year. Grab the lightest things you have.”

“Okay, well, I’ll see you in a few,” Nicole said as she stood up and headed to the bathroom.

“Sounds good.”

She hung up and tossed her phone on the bed and turned on the hot water to her sink. Her work wasn’t far from home. She, Janet, and a handful of others worked out of a satellite office, so there was little fear in coming in late or leaving early. Their manager was in a different time zone, and was most likely still sleeping, considering the itinerary came from his assistant.

She washed her face and brushed her teeth as her mind wandered. Luke, if he was indeed cheating, was most likely going to be happy about her three week trip. She’d have to gauge his response. Nicole decided on telling him person to see his reactions, as opposed to calling him and telling him.

Nicole leaned back in her chair as she stretched her arms and yawned. Janet wandered by and gave her a small wink. “You’re already tired?” She joked as she leaned over Nicole’s cubicle.

“Yeah, I don’t know why I keep coming into the office. I need to just work from home,” Nicole responded.

“Hey, you know if you do, I’m going to have to report you,” Janet replied with a smile.

“Oh please.”

“Did you tell Luke yet?” Janet inquired.

“About the trip?”

“Yeah.”

“No, I plan on telling him tonight over dinner. I want to see how he reacts in person,” Nicole answered.

“Good idea. You think he’ll be upset?”

“He should. I mean, if he’s not upset, then I don’t know, maybe he really is just… easy going,” Nicole responded. She knew in the back of her mind what Janet was going to say next.

“Or he’s cheating,” Janet said, exactly as Nicole had thought.

“He’s not. Sheesh. I know you ran into a handful of scumbags in the past but Luke isn’t like that,” Nicole replied.

Her voice strangely echoed in her head as if she couldn’t believe her own words. There was a slight bit of doubt. But it couldn’t have been possible Nicole thought. They had been together for so long and had only recently gotten married. There was no way he could have been cheating on her.

“Hey, fair enough. I’m just giving you a head’s up. I’ve been there girl,” Janet said as she tapped my cubicle wall with her neatly manicured nails. “Lunch?”

“Sure. What do you feel like?” Nicole asked.

“I’m not sure, thinking that Chinese place down the street?”

“Hm… Okay, they have some good spicy food,” Nicole agreed as she stood up and grabbed her jacket and purse.

The two headed out of the office and walked by a burger joint. A man came out holding a large hotdog and gave them a nod before continuing on. Janet stared for a moment and Nicole tapped her with her elbow.

“You interested in that guy?” Nicole laughed.

“Hm? No, that sausage was pretty big,” Janet responded with a smirk.

“What? You want a sausage?”

“Oh no, I was craving some sausage but now that I know I’m going to Botswana, I know I can wait,” Janet replied.

Nicole’s eyebrows furrowed as she looked her coworker. “Do they have good sausages there or something?”

Janet smiled and lightly tapped Nicole on the shoulder. “Oh, some of the best,” she replied, sounding a bit strange.

“Really? Africa in general doesn’t strike me as a place that has the best sausages.”

“You’d be surprised. They’re huge. All natural,” Janet said, he smile unfading.

“Okay…” Nicole replied as she looked at Janet’s eyes.

Her coworker looked as though she had zoned out, staring out at nothing. Nicole shook her head and lightly tapped her with her elbow again, breaking her out of her little trance like state. Janet cleared her throat and rubbed her neck before continuing on with Nicole.

“Trust me Nicole, you’ll see what I’m talking about,” Janet said.

“I’m sure I will. Can’t say I’m going to try it though,” Nicole responded.

Janet gave Nicole a sly little smirk and shook her head. “Never say never. I have a feeling you would really enjoy them.”

“Uh huh. I’m not a fan of sausage in general. Who knows what Africans put in theirs,” Nicole replied.

“Don’t be so quick to judge. I remember my first couple… My God, they were so big and…” Janet paused as she placed a finger to her lips and suppressed a larger smile. “Juicy would be the right word I guess,” she continued.

Nicole rolled her eyes and opened the door to the restaurant. Janet walked in and Nicole followed closely behind. They waited to be seated and ordered a handful of dishes. They weren’t in any rush to get back to the satellite office.

Nicole placed a dinner plate on the table and filled it with some steamed vegetables and a fish on top. Luke glanced at his phone before looking at her and giving her a smile. She smiled back and sat at her side of the table.

“Thanks,” he said as he cut into the fish.

“How was work?” Nicole inquired.

He took a bite of the fish and looked up at her. “It was the usual, boring. You?”

“My manager finally got back to me on the upcoming trip. Looks like our team is going to South Africa,” she replied.

“So it’s confirmed then?” He asked as he picked up his cup of water.

“Yeah, and unfortunately I’m flying out next week,” Nicole answered.

“Next week? Wow, pretty short notice. Flights must be expensive.”

Nicole nodded. It wasn’t exactly the response she was hoping for. “And, it’s not two weeks, it’s three weeks.”

“Three weeks? Wow. In South Africa?” He drank his water before putting his cup down and getting another bite of fish. “Guess you can’t pack light,” he continued.

“Nope. I mean, it’s going to be hot there, according to Janet, so I won’t have to pack up too much,” Nicole replied.

She watched her husband’s movements and he didn’t seem at all upset by the fact that she was going to be gone for three weeks. He seemed rather nonchalant as he glanced at his phone again and took another bite of his fish. She wanted to smack him in the head and wake him up to the situation at hand.

“Do you need a ride to the airport?” He asked as he picked up his phone and swiped across the screen. “I think I’m pretty free next week, should be able to take some time off to drop you off. Unless it’s a weekend, then I can just drop you off regardless.”

“No, I think Janet and I are going to share a town car.”

“Oh nice. You should try to get one of those nice ones, tinted windows and all that,” he replied.

Nicole gritted her teeth as she held in her anger. She watched as he swiped something on his phone and smirked. A part of her wanted to reach out and grab his phone to see what was so interesting.

“This is some good fish by the way,” he commented as he put his phone down.

“Thanks,” Nicole replied, a touch of bitterness in her voice; not that Luke took notice of it.

She stared as he scarfed down his food, occasionally looking back at his phone and swiping his fingers on it, obviously typing something. Nicole sighed and ate some of her dinner, the bitterness welling up inside her. Luke finished his dish, wiped his lips with a nearby napkin and headed off to the living room, turning on the television set and plopping down on the couch.

“Don’t forget to do the dishes tonight,” Nicole reminded.

“Yeah, I got it,” Luke replied as he stared at his phone.

Nicole sighed again as she finished her dinner, wondering what Luke was so busy typing. She wondered if it actually was another woman but shook her head at the thought. Janet’s comments were starting to get to her. Nicole grabbed the plates and placed them in the sink and sat next Luke, trying to glance over at his phone before he put it back in his pocket.

“Work?” She inquired.

“Yeah, it’s some follow up I should’ve finished a couple days ago. My manager never actually gave me the files I needed so I pushed it back and then he tried to throw me under the bus. The guy is such an ass. I might have to visit the office real quick,” Luke answered.

“Oh no, that’s not good. You can’t wait?” Nicole asked.

“Yeah, I think I forgot a couple of folders,” Luke replied as he switched through the channels. “I’ll go after this game,” he continued as he stopped channel surfing on ESPN.

Nicole yawned as she watched the baseball game he had stopped on. Luke very well knew that she was not really an avid baseball fan, but yet he insisted on watching it when the season started. She blinked several times before her eyes closed and she dozed off.

The slight shaking of the couch made her wake up and glance to her left. She saw Luke as he walked up the stairs and her eyes slowly wandered down to see his phone right next to her, buzzing to life briefly. After watching Luke head upstairs, she picked up his phone and unlocked it to see that he had received a text message from Yvonne, one of the executive assistants at his workplace.

She thought it must have had something to do with work, but her curiosity got the best of her. Her finger trembled as she clicked on the text message and anger immediately flooded her. It was a picture of Yvonne, a selfie, with her looking up at the camera, her lips pressed together, and a heart below the picture. Nicole scrolled up at the previous messages and gritted her teeth as she saw a couple of nude pictures of Yvonne, spreading her legs or showing her ass.

“Son of a bitch,” Nicole growled as she scrolled back to the original spot and marked the message as unread. She shut the phone off and placed it back on the couch just as Luke began his descent down the stairs.

Her body trembled in anger as she closed her eyes and tried to act as if she was still sleeping. Luke was whistling slightly as he turned and headed into the kitchen. Nicole tried to take slow, deliberate breaths to calm herself. She wanted to confront him then and there but decided to bide her time. Janet would be able to tell her how to extract the information from Luke’s phone.

Luke swung back and picked up his phone before kissing Nicole on the forehead. “Hey, are you sleeping?” He whispered.

Nicole blinked slowly, acting as if she had just woken up while looking up at Luke. She gave him a small nod and smiled. “Hey, yeah, I was,” she whispered back.

“Oh sorry, I have to go. Wanted to make sure you knew so you didn’t freak out. And plus, you should sleep upstairs,” Luke suggested.
